Woman Killed When Car Crashes Into Post Office

In a car, the brake is separate from the accelerator, but unfortunately, drivers confuse the two sometimes because the pedals are so close together. This is a serious issue that has led to numerous crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
This was recently the case in Houston when a driver mistook the gas for the brake, causing her to hit and kill a woman. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of November 30 at a United States Postal Service office located on Rogerdale Road.
The driver, an 84-year-old woman, was pulling into a parking spot when she hit the gas pedal by mistake. This caused the SUV to lurch forward and hit a woman who was attempting to enter the post office. The vehicle stopped at a back wall. The woman died at the accident scene. The driver was taken to a local hospital, but was not seriously injured. There was damage to the front doors of the building and a portion of the vehicle was inside the post office.
The crash is under investigation. Intoxication does not appear to be a factor. The Harris County Vehicular Crimes Division chief says it looks to be a tragic accident, but they are still looking into it to be sure.
Police have been interviewing the driver and her family members. She does have a valid driver’s license but her driving history is still under review. The woman faces no criminal charges at this time.
Pedal Error
Pedal error occurs when a driver confuses the brake and gas pedals. It is a serious issue, accounting for thousands of car accidents every year. It can happen when the foot slides from one pedal to another or when both pedals are pressed at the same time. Drivers older than age 65 or under age 20 are most likely to experience pedal error.
Pedal error most often occurs in parking lots and at intersections and exit ramps. It causes the vehicle to accelerate abruptly, which can be dangerous for other drivers as well as bystanders.
Pedal error is avoidable. As a driver, you should be focusing solely on the task of driving. Do not get distracted by your phone or your passengers. Avoid eating, drinking, reading, changing the radio station, or performing other tasks while driving. Avoid wearing high heels and flip flops while driving, Instead, choose shoes with flat soles. Also, take your time when in parking lots. Do not be in a hurry to get in or out of a parking spot.
