Man Killed In Hit And Run Crash In Houston

Accident7

After a car accident, all drivers need to remain at the accident scene. It’s just a basic duty expected of all motorists. However, many fail to do so for a variety of reasons. This often results in the victims dying of their injuries.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Houston. A motorcyclist was killed in an accident after the other driver did not stop and render medical assistance. The fatal accident occurred at around noon on June 25 on Almeda Genoa Road.

A 39-year-old man was riding a Yamaha motorcycle and approaching the intersection of Monroe Road when he was hit by a Mercury Marquis. The vehicle had just left a gas station and was attempting to turn onto Monroe Road when the accident took place.

Witnesses saw the Mercury run a red light while the motorcycle had the green light. The motorcycle rider was taken to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, where he later died.

The driver of the Mercury fled the scene and did not stop to provide medical assistance. The accident is still under investigation. The Houston Police Department is still looking for the driver.

Hit and Run Crashes on the Rise

Texas is one of the top states for hit and run accidents. In fact, it is one of three states where more than 1,000 fatal hit and run crashes occurred between the 10-year period ranging from 2010 to 2019. California topped the list at 2,948 crashes, with Texas in second place at 1,965 crashes. Florida rounded the top three, at 1,739 crashes.

During this time period, there were 17,531 total fatalities, but only 3,136 drivers killed. This likely means that passengers and pedestrians were most likely to be killed in a hit and run crash.

Because of the high number of hit and run crashes, it’s important to protect yourself financially.

Car insurance does not always cover these types of accidents. In fact, a standard car insurance policy offers no protection, so you need to make sure you have proper coverage. Victims ideally should have uninsured motorist insurance coverage to deal with these situations. This policy covers situations in which the other driver does not have enough insurance or has no insurance at all. It also covers hit and run crashes. Otherwise, their collision, personal injury protection (PIP), or medical payments (MedPay) coverages may apply.
