2 Killed In Hit And Run Crash On Scooter

Scooter4

Riding a scooter on the road can be fun but it’s not always safe. Scooters are not particularly fast, so when they are on the road with passenger vehicles, accidents can happen due to the differences in speed.

This recently happened in Houston, and as a result, two people were killed. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of May 10 on the I-45 Gulf Freeway.

Two people were riding a Coleman motorcycle scooter in the outbound lanes of the I-45 Gulf Freeway at Cullen Boulevard. The man and woman were in the 4000 block of the Gulf Freeway, heading south, when they were rear-ended by a pickup truck. The driver fled the accident scene.

The two people, both 37 years old, were ejected from the motorcycle scooter. They came to rest on the interstate, where they were then hit by other drivers. Because the crash happened on the far side of a hillcrest, other drivers on the freeway could not see the victims, which is why multiple motorists hit them. Both the man and woman died at the accident scene.

The initial vehicle did not stop. Investigators from the Houston Police Department are combing the area for surveillance video and looking for clues to track down the driver. They are hoping to obtain any car parts and pieces that can aid in the investigation. It is believed that the initial vehicle, a pickup truck, has significant damage. Other drivers who hit the victims after the initial crash remained at the scene and spoke to investigators.

As police were arriving at the scene of the crash, another vehicle rear-ended several other cars that were stopped, but the driver fled the accident scene without stopping. Police eventually caught that driver, who was taken into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information on the suspect driver should contact the Houston Police Department.

Scooters and Mopeds in Texas

In Texas, a motor-assisted scooter has a gas or electric motor under 40 cubic centimeters. It may only be operated on a street or highway with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.

A moped, on the other hand, is a motor vehicle designed with a seat or saddle. It has no more than three wheels and a piston displacement of no more than 50 cubic centimeters. Mopeds cannot reach speeds above 30 miles per hour.

Scooters and mopeds should not be driven on Texas highways, where speed limits may reach 75, 80, or even 85 miles per hour.
