What to Know About T-Bone Accidents

TBoneAcc

When you hear the word “T-bone,” you may imagine a juicy steak, but in the world of auto accidents, a T-bone crash is often a dangerous one. A T-bone accident occurs when the front of one vehicle hits the side of another, creating a “T” shape at the point of impact.

Accidents like these are most common at intersections but they can happen anywhere. Due to the force of impact, the result is often significant vehicle damage and injuries.

In some cases, these accidents can be fatal. This was the case in a recent crash in Houston. Two vehicles were involved in a T-bone accident at an intersection. One person was killed in the crash, while five others were injured. Some suffered critical injuries.

Causes of T-Bone Accidents

Failure to yield is the primary cause of T-bone accidents. It happens when a driver ignores a yield sign or stop sign, or attempts to turn left across oncoming traffic. Other causes include:

  • Distracted driving. Any distraction that takes a driver’s focus off the road can result in a T-bone crash. Common examples include texting, talking on a phone, adjusting controls, or eating while driving.
  • Impaired driving. Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs greatly increases the likelihood of a side-impact collision. Impairment affects judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making it harder for drivers to respond to traffic signals and other vehicles.
  • Exceeding the speed limit reduces a driver’s ability to react quickly and avoid a crash. Higher speeds also increase stopping distance and the force of impact, often resulting in more severe injuries and property damage in a T-bone accident.
  • Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving. Fatigue slows reaction time, affects decision-making, and in extreme cases can cause a driver to fall asleep behind the wheel, significantly increasing the risk of a collision.

Common Injuries

T-bone accidents are especially dangerous because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear. Possible injuries include:

  • Head and brain injuries. The force of a side-impact crash can cause the head to strike windows, doors, or airbags, leading to concussions, traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures, and long-term cognitive issues.
  • Neck and spine injuries. The sudden sideways motion can strain or damage the spine, causing whiplash, soft tissue injuries, herniated discs, and spinal cord damage.
  • Chest and rib injuries. The torso often absorbs much of the impact, causing broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and internal bleeding or organ damage.
