Most Dangerous Intersections In Houston

Intersection

It’s no secret that the roads in Houston are busy, and with many people returning to the office after working from home for two years, the roads are about to get busier. This can lead motorists to drive dangerously, causing serious accidents and catastrophic injuries.

Now that Texas has fully reopened after COVID lockdowns, what intersections are the most dangerous for drivers, pedestrians, and other users? Where should you avoid driving?

Research has shown that the number of crashes has increased since before the pandemic, but it’s unknown exactly why. The most dangerous intersections, based on the number of accidents in the past year, can be found around FM 1960, SH 6, and the 610 Loop. These intersections can be especially dangerous for those unfamiliar with the area.

Taking the top spot was the intersection at Pease Street and Fannin Street, which had 59 crashes. The likely reason for this distinction is the fact that the intersection is surrounded by parking garages, which means vehicles are constantly going in and out.

Next was the Bissonnet Street and Westchester Avenue intersection, with 41 accidents. Tied for third place were Main Street and Montrose Boulevard, FM 1960 and W. Lake Houston Parkway, and S. Gessner Road and Westpark Drive, all with 39 crashes each.

Spencer Road and Highway 6 and Highway 6 and Bellaire Boulevard had 37 crashes each. Right behind them were Treaschwig Road and FM 1960, Clay Road and Barker Cypress Road, and Highway 6 and Westheimer Road, all with 36 crashes each.

What Makes Intersections So Dangerous?

Dangerous intersections are often the result of poor road design. For example, there may be poor lighting at an intersection, impeding visibility in the dark. There may be a lack of road signs or traffic signals, or if there are some, they may be confusing. If there are roundabouts, it’s possible that drivers may not be aware of proper use.

Negligent drivers also play a role. Distracted driving is a major issue, with motorists texting, reading, eating, grooming, talking to passengers, dealing with pets, or otherwise trying to multitask while driving. This causes drivers to take their eyes off the road, and when they are not focused on driving, they can collide with vehicles or other objects in front of them.

Drivers may also speed or be lost. Many are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drowsy driving can be just as bad, and overworked truck drives are often at fault. Some drivers may ignore stop signs, causing them to collide with drivers who are following the laws.
