Motorcyclist Killed In Semi Truck Crash

MotorcycleFront

Riding a motorcycle can be a lot of fun, but these two-wheeled vehicles come with a lot of dangers. For one, they are much smaller than other vehicles, so they are more likely to be involved in a crash. These accidents can be fatal, especially if semi trucks are involved.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Houston, when a motorcycle and semi truck collided. The motorcycle rider died in the crash, which occurred on the morning of July 28.

The two vehicles collided in the 15600 block of Aldine Westfield Road, near Bush Intercontinental Airport. The details of the crash are unknown, but the motorcyclist died at the accident scene. The accident is under investigation.

Motorcycle and Semi Truck Accidents

Accidents involving motorcycles and semi trucks are often deadly, and for good reason. Motorcycles are the smallest vehicle on the roadways, while semi trucks are the largest. A semi truck can easily run over a motorcycle and its rider, causing catastrophic or fatal injuries.

Even if a motorcycle collides with a semi truck, such as in a rear-end accident, the outcome can also be fatal. That’s because a motorcycle can easily slide under a semi truck and get stuck, causing deadly injuries. The rider can also be ejected due to the impact, and this can result in significant injuries as well.

Safety is key when riding a motorcycle, as 80% of motorcycle accidents result in injury or death for the rider. That’s because motorcycles and riders lack protections that other vehicles and their occupants have.

The leading cause of injury or death from a motorcycle accident is a head injury. Because motorcycles are not enclosed, the most important factor in reducing injury is wearing the right gear. Helmets are by far the most important piece of safety equipment because they protect against head and brain injuries. However, gloves, leather jackets, eye protection, and boots are also helpful in preventing injuries.

However, not all motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets in Texas. Texas only requires helmets for those under the age of 21. All riders under age 21 are required to wear a helmet—no exceptions. If you are over the age of 21, you may be exempt from wearing a helmet if you meet one of these exemptions:

  • You have successfully completed the required motorcycle education course.
  • You have medical insurance that covers injuries that result from a motorcycle accident.

For many riders, motorcycles are more than a mode of transportation. Therefore, riders should understand Texas motorcycle laws before heading out on the open road. Knowing these laws will keep you safe and ensure you are compliant so you can avoid legal issues.

Motorcycles are small and often hard to see. Riders can get easily injured in a crash with a larger vehicle like a semi truck.
