Driver Killed After Speed Causes Crash

Speeding2

There are many ways in which accidents can occur. One of the major causes is speed. Many drivers think it is fun to exceed the speed limit. However, speeding comes with a lot of risks.

The faster a vehicle is going, the more likely a driver is to lose control. Sadly, a driver recently died after losing control and flipping over a vehicle. The fatal accident happened on the morning of October 2 in Southwest Houston.

A car was traveling on Beechnut Street at a high rate of speed when it crashed near South Kirkwood Road. The driver was trying to change lanes when it hit another vehicle and veered off the road. The car went onto the sidewalk. It then knocked over a metal pole before flipping over.

There were two people inside the flipped car. The passenger is OK, but the driver died at the accident scene. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

Speed and Rollovers

There is a connection between speed and rollovers — mainly, excessive speed is much more likely to cause rollovers. When a vehicle goes around a curve at high speeds, rollovers are likely, even when there is no collision involved. When a vehicle crashes at low speeds, like a fender-bender in a parking lot, the vehicles are less likely to roll over due to the lower impact.

However, speed is not the only element involved in rollover accidents. Typically, there is something else at play, such as the following:

  • Size of the vehicle. Larger vehicles, such as semi trucks, vans, and SUVs, have a higher center of gravity. Therefore, speeding makes these vehicles more likely to tip over, especially if they are carrying large loads.
  • Poor weather conditions. Rain, snow, and ice create slippery road conditions, which can increase the risk of a rollover accident. A rollover accident is much more likely when speed is involved. Heavy winds can also cause rollovers by pushing the vehicle. Therefore, those who drive in inclement weather must adjust their speed accordingly.
  • Road hazards. Objects in the road can cause loss of control, especially at high speeds. Potholes, fallen trees, and loose materials can catch a vehicle off guard. As a result, they can send a vehicle off balance and lead to rollovers.
  • Poor vehicle maintenance. When a semi truck has a heavy load, the vehicle should be well-maintained. This includes having working brakes and tires with sufficient tread. However, poor maintenance on any vehicle can lead to serious accidents.

Speed is one of the biggest causes of car accidents. While drivers cannot predict the actions of other motorists, they can do their part by slowing down and driving safely.
