Preventing Semi Truck Accidents

Truck6

Semi trucks can be commonly found on Texas’ roadways. These large vehicles haul many of the produce and goods that we use on a daily basis. While essential, semi trucks pose a huge threat when traveling in tandem with other vehicles that are much smaller.

When a semi truck collides with a passenger vehicle, the results can be disastrous and most likely, fatal. Large trucks accounted for 4,862 fatal crashes in 2018.

Because of this, it’s a good idea for drivers of passenger vehicles to know how to drive in order to avoid being a victim of a deadly crash. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe when on the road.

Avoid Staying in the Blind Spots

Semi trucks are large and have many blind spots. These include the lane on the driver’s side, the two lanes on the right side, 20 feet in front of the truck and 30 feet behind the truck. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if you can’t see the truck’s mirrors, the driver can’t see you. If you must maneuver around a semi truck, do so quickly and don’t linger.

Don’t Pass on the Right

Trucks have more blind spots on the right side, so they will likely not be able to see you. Plus, this practice is illegal in many states.

Give More Room

If you’re behind a semi truck, don’t tailgate them. Give them extra room in case they need to stop suddenly. Many accidents occur when a passenger vehicle can’t stop and ends up underneath a semi truck. Strive to give four seconds or more of room.

Let Them Merge

Sometimes trucks need to merge into an adjacent lane and it’s understandable that you don’t want to let them in and have to drive slowly behind them. However, speeding up and trying to pass them can have dangerous results. You’ll be in the truck’s blind spot, increasing the risk of a serious crash. Therefore, be courteous and share the road. You may have to slow down for a while, but it’s better than being seriously injured or dead.

Be Sure to Signal

A good way to avoid accidents is to make your intentions clear. Don’t make a truck driver play guessing games. If you need to switch lanes, then use your signals.

Don’t Drive Distracted

Driving distracted is one of the main causes of car accidents. Make sure to stay focused when on the road. Avoid texting, reading, eating, cell phone and other behaviors that take your hands, eyes or mind off the task of driving.

Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

Nobody wants to get hit by a semi truck. These vehicles can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and cause catastrophic injuries and even death.
