Mother Killed While Checking On Kids After Minor Crash

CarAccident7

Car accidents happen every day. Many are minor fender benders, but without proper safety, they can end up being fatalities.

That was what happened to a woman who was involved in a crash in Kingwood on the evening of February 20. The woman was driving a sedan on southbound Highway 59, near Kingwood Drive, when she was rear-ended by another vehicle. The vehicle fled the accident scene.

The woman, however, stopped right there in the road and got out of her vehicle to check on her kids in the back of the car. As she stepped out, she was hit by a truck. Another truck then rear-ended the sedan, causing the woman to be thrown. She died at the accident scene. The drivers stopped and are not expecting to face criminal charges.

What to Do After a Car Accident

After a car crash, drivers should pull over all the way to the shoulder of the road if possible. If they can steer their vehicle they should clear it off the roadway as quickly as they can. This is especially critical on freeways, where speeds can exceed 65 miles per hour and drivers cannot always stop quickly to avoid disabled vehicles in the middle of the road. Once you get off the road, turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers so they do not rear-end your vehicle.

Even if you are experiencing car trouble, such as a flat tire, it’s a good idea to never just stop on the road. Pull over to the side of the road or a safe location. If you can exit the freeway safely, that’s even better.

Drivers should never park their vehicle in the center divide. If they have no other choice, they should keep their seatbelt on and call 911 right away so help can arrive quickly.

However, keep in mind that even pulling over to the shoulder can still be dangerous. Many accidents happen on the shoulders of the road. Shoulders can be risky due to a variety of factors, such as:

  • Decreased visibility. High speeds can make it harder for drivers to see you on the side of the road.
  • Driver confusion. Drivers do not often see vehicles on the shoulder, which can make them confused and actually cause them to steer into you.
  • Sideswipe accidents. Cars can easily rear-end you or hit your vehicle in other ways.
  • Pedestrian accidents. Standing outside your vehicle on the shoulder puts you at risk for a pedestrian accident.

After any type of car crash, it’s best to pull over all the way to the shoulder. Stopping in the road can cause subsequent accidents to occur, and they can be deadly, as seen in this case.
