More Than 30% Of Fatal Crashes In Texas Caused By Speed

Speeding2

As the saying goes, speed kills. Texas officials are finding this out after data shows an increase of fatal car accidents on Texas roadways.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, speed contributes to one out of every three traffic fatalities. In 2021, 34% of deaths on Texas roads were caused by speed. The state hasn’t seen numbers this high since 1981.

In 2021, there were 163,756 traffic crashes in Texas. This resulted in 6,493 serious injuries and 1,532 fatalities.

The good news is that the state is trying to encourage safer driving. The Texas Department of Transportation is partnering with law enforcement to launch Operation Slowdown. From June 7 through June 21, law enforcement officers will be out on the roadways citing speeding drivers and reminding motorists what a safe speed looks like.

How to Manage Your Speed

Even going a few miles above the speed limit is dangerous. It puts you at a greater risk of getting a speeding ticket or getting into an accident.

  • Match your speed to road conditions, particularly in bad weather such as ice, rain, or snow.
  • Slow down when traffic is heavy so you can give yourself more room to maneuver.
  • Leave earlier to allow yourself more time to get to your destination.
  • Watch for signs alerting you of reduced speed limits ahead.
  • Be on the lookout for police vehicles hiding in speed traps; they could be cutouts in the road or bushes or trees where police tend to hide.
  • Use cruise control to maintain a set speed.
  • Try to stay in the middle of the pack of cars instead of being the lead vehicle, as you’ll be more likely to get a ticket.
  • Stay at the same speed as the rest of traffic; going just 5 mph faster than the other vehicles can make you stand out and make you more likely to get a ticket.
  • Identify triggers, such as stress and anger, that may cause you to drive faster than normal.
  • Practice calming exercises when you feel stressed out and want to go fast.
  • Consider driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, as you will have to shift gears to go faster and this will make you more aware of your speed.
  • Be especially wary of police if you drive a vehicle that stands out, such as a brightly colored (red or yellow) Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Charger, Ferrari, or Lamborghini.
