Man Crashes Into Houston Restaurant

DUI_Accident

Many people drink and drive. While some are able to get to their destination without crashing, there are many others who end up driving in the wrong direction, crashing into other vehicles and even buildings.

A man has been suspected of DUI after crashing into the African restaurant Komchop in Houston. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured. The accident occurred on the evening of September 6 in the 14000 block of Westheimer Road.

A Toyota Corolla was speeding in the wrong direction on Westheimer Road. It was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when the driver lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle then went off the road and hit a dip. It went airborne, clipped a sign, then crashed into the office area of Komchop restaurant.

The car slammed into the side of the restaurant, missing customers by just a few feet. Sparks and glass flew as the driver sped into the building. There were about a dozen customers inside the restaurant eating when the crash took place. One customer was injured by flying glass.

The 38-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the Toyota. He was trapped inside the car and had to be rescued. Both the injured customer and driver were taken to a local hospital. Both are in stable condition. The driver is facing possible charges for being under the influence. DUI or drug charges are pending. The man was wanted for felony warrants.

While the accident could have been much worse, the crash still caused extensive damage to the restaurant. The repairs will likely cost thousands of dollars.

Hitting Buildings While Driving

You may think that a vehicle hitting a building is just a freak accident, but the truth is that types of crashes are common. In fact, 60 of them occur every day, on average. Most are preventable.

The most common type of crash is due to “pedal error,” which is when a driver mistakes the accelerator for the brake. A variation is when drivers think they are reversing, but are actually going forward, causing them to drive through a building. So drunk driving is not always the issue.

Nealty 40% of the drivers involved are over the age of 60 and older. However, drivers of all ages have been involved in these accidents.

Many stores are taking action. Big convenience store chains, such as 7-Eleven, are putting up barriers such as bollards to protect their buildings from the effects of these accidents. These barriers save on lawsuits and help prevent property damage.
