Driver Killed While Repairing Car On Roadside

RepairingTire

We depend on cars to get us from place to place, but sometimes even our trusty vehicles can leave us stranded. When a breakdown occurs on or near a busy road, it can put us in dangerous situations.

Sadly, this situation recently happened in Houston, leaving a man dead. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight on December 18 along Tomball Parkway.

A Honda sedan stalled in the main lanes just before Greens Road. The driver, an unidentified man, exited the Honda to work on it. A driver in an SUV failed to see the stalled car and rear-ended it. The man was working on the engine at the time. He was thrown over the Honda and hit by the SUV.

The man died at the accident scene. The driver of the SUV, an unidentified woman, was injured and taken to a local hospital. She is in stable condition.

Police are conducting tests to determine if the woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, poor lighting likely contributed to the crash. Some lights on that area of the freeway have not been working for a while. It gets very dark, especially at that time of night,

Safety Tips After a Breakdown

It can be scary when your car stalls on a busy road. What do you do? How do you stay safe? Here are some tips:

  • Never exit your vehicle on a busy road. Cars are traveling at high speeds and they likely won’t be able to stop in time to avoid hitting you. Wait until you are safely on the side of the road.
  • Stay in the vehicle. If you cannot drive your vehicle, then stay inside it, with your seat belt on. You’re more likely to stay safe while inside your vehicle.
  • Use flares, triangles, and hazard lights. Once you are on the side of the road, it’s a good idea to identify your vehicle with flares and triangles. If you don’t have any, then turn on your hazard lights. These signals can warn other drivers that you are broken down.
  • Call for help. Once you and your vehicle are safe, call for help. You can contact roadside assistance, like AAA. You may also have benefits under your auto insurance. If you have good car repair skills, you may be able to repair the vehicle on your own. Just be safe and use common sense.
