Special Needs Child Killed In Crash

PedestrianCrosswalk

Pedestrian accidents can be devastating experiences. Getting hit by a car can be a gruesome experience that can lead to long-term injuries or even fatality. Sadly, a teen was recently killed in a pedestrian crash in Tomball, outside of Houston.

The 15-year-old special needs child had wandered away from his home when he was hit and killed by a vehicle. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of February 27 on Spring Cypress Road, near SH 249.

The teen was a mile away from his home when he was hit by a car. He was crossing the road from south to north when the driver of a Toyota Prius swerved to attempt to avoid him. Unfortunately, the driver was unsuccessful and hit the boy. The teen died from his injuries.

There are no crosswalks in the area and the lone sidewalk ends about 200 feet away from where the teen was hit. The driver of the car remained at the accident scene. They did not show any signs of intoxication. A Toyota Prius was towed away from the accident scene several hours later.

The details of the crash are still under investigation. It is still unknown how the boy left his home in the middle of the night as well as how he got out of his gated neighborhood. Investigators are also looking into other details, such as the speed of the Toyota at the time of the crash. At this time, it is considered a tragic accident.

The boy leaves behind many distraught friends and family members. They are asking for privacy, prayers, and support during this emotional time.

Child Pedestrian Accidents

As seen in this case, pedestrian accidents among children are tragic situations, especially when the incident results in fatality. Child pedestrian crashes happen often, as children can be hard to see. Plus, they often make erratic movements, as they are not used to vehicles in the roadways. A special needs child would have an especially difficult time navigating roadways, especially in areas where sidewalks and crosswalks are limited or nonexistent.

Plus, statistics show that teens between the ages of 15 and 19 are most likely to get injured or killed in pedestrian accidents. Also, boys account for two-thirds of these deaths. The victim in this case was a 15-year-old boy.

Most deaths occur in the late afternoon/ evening hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The accident in this case occurred at 3:45 a.m., but it was likely dark at that time and hard to see the boy in the road.
